As an artist, using EARTH and FIRE to create a stronger item—ceramics— is really beautiful and poetic. Each of us is like ceramics, strengthened in some way through difficulty.

In 2014, I had a dream where I saw a painting on ceramic tiles. It was earthy, painterly, and vibrant. I had never seen art like that before.

Using mud (earth) and fire seemed like a natural step in my work and I was happy to have been given the idea in a dream.

This is an on-going series where I will be exploring different glazes and techniques to best portray wildfire landscapes and the personal connection we each have to nature’s cycle of destruction and growth.

I hope the energy and texture from nature’s elements excites the viewer and reminds them of the beauty, fragility, and strength that fire creates.
